I am looking to increase the HP of my 1990 1.6 Miata. The car is mainly being built for a track car but I still enjoy driving it on the street. This past year I have worked on getting the suspension sorted out, and I am now running 700f and 350r springs with Hoosier 205/50/15 SM6’s. Best of all, the NC Miata comes either with a 1.8-liter 124-hp four-banger or a 2.0-liter 158-hp four-cylinder engine. Paying just $7,500 for such a tremendous sports car seems almost sinful. The stock 1.6 makes any where from like 80 to 95 HP to the wheels. It can be hard to get significant power out of those engines without a turbo. B-series internals make it a long way up the horsepower ladder, but to reach 1,000 it’ll need something burlier. Builders recommend, for high boost applications, new pistons, rings, rods, and main bearings. The next round of upgrades involves turbocharging it. A stock head will run up to 18 psi of boost with a built bottom end, and a First generation NA Mazda MX-5 Miata undergoes a rebuilt to double horsepower with 1.8-liter NB2 engine swap and turbo conversion.
